This Friday (May 24, 2024), China carried out simulations of attacks with real fighter jets and missiles on the outskirts of Taiwan, reported the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.
The maneuvers are part of the military exercises launched by China, on Thursday (May 23), in the Taiwan Strait and around the island. According to Beijing, the initiative is “a strong punishment” by the “separatist acts” promoted in the territory.
Military exercises include the participation of the Army, Navy and Air Force, and the use of rockets. The joint operation was called Joint Sword-2024A.
The initiative comes days after the inauguration of Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-Te, considered “separatist” by Beijing. Since Lai’s victory in the January elections, China has openly expressed its opposition. Before the election, the Chinese government even stated that the then candidate could mean a choice between war and peace.
