China can take advantage of the crisis in Ukraine to do something “provocative” in Asia, while Western powers focus on easing tensions with Russia – warned a US general on Wednesday (16).
The head of the US Air Force in the Pacific, General Kenneth Wilsbach, recalled that China sided with Russia in the crisis, raising doubts about its intentions in Asia.
“From the standpoint of whether China looks at what’s happening in Europe and … tries to do something here in the Asia-Pacific region, absolutely yes, that’s a concern,” Wilsbach said.
“I’m worried that they want to take advantage of it,” added the soldier when speaking to journalists during the Singapore Air Show.
The deployment of more than 100,000 Russian troops to the Ukrainian border has sparked fears in Washington and other Western capitals of a possible invasion.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried something that might be provocative to see how the international community reacts,” he added.
Wilsbach said that when Beijing supported Russia in the Ukrainian crisis, he spoke with his staff and representatives of other regional “entities” about the consequences of that stance.
For years, Beijing has been accused of provoking tensions in the region by seizing key islands and atolls in the South China Sea. China claims sovereignty over nearly all of this sea, including parts claimed by Taiwan, Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
The United States and other Western countries fear that Chinese control will affect free navigation on this strategic road.
According to Wilsbach, when China sees a crisis, it asks “if it is an opportunity to win something”.
He did not detail what China could do about the Ukraine crisis, but said it would “probably have numerous options”.
