China today expressed its opposition to “any action that violates the Charter of the United Nations or undermines the territorial sovereignty and security of other states” and called for “restraint” after the US bombings in Syria and Iraq.
“Syria and Iraq are sovereign states, and China opposes any action that violates the Charter of the United Nations or that undermines the territorial sovereignty and security of other states,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said today at a press conference in response to a question about the bombings.
The spokesperson commented that the situation in the Middle East is “very complex and sensitive”, and asked all parties involved to respect the International Law and to remain calm.
“We ask for restraint to avoid a further escalation or the situation out of control,” he said.
After two days of bombings against pro-Iranian militia facilities in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, US President Joe Biden warned that “new actions” have not been ruled out, which could even take place on Iranian territory.
Although the US is still evaluating the results of these attacks, which according to the Iraqi Government and the NGO Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have caused 45 deaths in both countries, some of them civilians.
The UN Security Council convened an emergency session at the request of Russia to address the rise in tension in the Middle East caused by US bombings against targets linked to Iran.
Beijing has been Tehran's main trading partner for ten years, as well as its largest oil buyer, and their ties were strengthened in 2021 with a cooperation agreement of 25 years in areas such as economicsthe military and the energy sector.
