Mount and Ziyech give the Blues victory against Watford, but not without difficulty. Opposite speech for the Reds who are rampant with Everton dragged by Salah’s brace. Guardiola’s team wins and confirms second in the standings
They all win, albeit in a different way. In the 14th day of the Premier League all three first in the class get the 3 points. Chelsea beat Ranieri’s Watford 2-1, suffering, in several moments, the physicality of the opponents. Liverpool spreads, dragged by Salah (brace): the Reds beat Everton 4-1 in the derby. It all seems easy for City, who closed the first half two goals at Aston Villa. In the second half, however, Guardiola’s team suffers the return of the villans (2-1 by Watkins), finding themselves defending the advantage with tooth and nail until the end. The ranking, however, is very fascinating: Chelsea 33, City 32, Liverpool 31.
THE BLUES TOUGH BUT THEY WIN
–
Tuchel chooses 3-4-2-1 with Mount and Pulisic behind Havertz. The game is tedious, tactical, physical. The opportunities are not many, but when Chelsea are out of balance, Watford takes the opportunity to become dangerous with Sissoko and Dennis. After the match had been suspended for more than 20 minutes due to an illness of a fan in the stands, at 19 ‘, Mount nearly took the lead with a nice conclusion that was printed on the post. 10 minutes pass, however, and the blues pass the same: Havertz is good, in the heart of the area, not to be enticed and to serve Mount instead of kicking on goal.
For the class of 1999 it is a penalty in motion that cannot be mistaken. 1-0. At 32 ‘Chelsea doubles: Pulisic pockets for Havertz, who beats Bachmann out. However, the former Leverkusen is offside and the goal is disallowed. Watford never leaves the game, however, and in the 35th minute nearly equalized with a nice shot by Rose on which Mendy was careful. In the 43rd minute, it was 1-1: Dennis, on Sissoko’s deep pass, managed to disorient Rudiger with a couple of feints before forcing Mendy to concede the first goal from action away from Stamford Bridge.
In the fourth minute of injury time Sissoko even has the 2-1 ball, but wastes it badly. The game remains balanced even in the second half, with Ziyech finding the decisive goal in the 73rd minute, after a good intuition from Mount. It ends like this, with Chelsea obtaining the victory with which they remain at the top of the standings. But from behind Liverpool and City make you feel the breath on your neck.
THE LIVERPOOL DERBY
–
Klopp, still without Firmino, lines up his team with a 4-3-3 with Mané, Jota and Salah leading the way. Liverpool started very strong and crushed Everton in their own penalty area. The hosts are struggling to defend and the Reds immediately take over: in the first 8 minutes there are three occasions for Liverpool (the most dangerous happens to Salah, but Pickford is careful), who in the 9 ‘goes on with Henderson’s first goal in the Merseyside derby (he was in his 18th appearance).
Liverpool, however, are not satisfied and close to doubling with Alexander-Arnold (another beautiful save from Pickford), before finding him with Salah in the 19 ‘. In the history of this derby only in two other circumstances, the Reds, away, had managed to go 2-0 within the first 20 minutes (it had happened in 2005 and 2012). Everton shortens the distance almost by chance, when Gray, on 39 ‘, beats Alisson. Liverpool are not intimidated and spread in the second half: first it is Salah, after a good personal action, to beat Pickford, then Jota, in the 79th minute, to drop the poker.
CITY OK
–
Guardiola’s Manchester City wins and confirms second in the standings, -1 from Chelsea. In Birmingham, against Aston Villa, it ends 2-0. The citizens play the game from the first minutes, claiming a penalty kick at 15 ‘for an alleged foul on Gabriel Jesus. Guardiola’s team unlocked the game in the 27th minute, when Ruben Dias, on an assist from Sterling, sent the ball right into the corner from the edge of the area, beating Martinez. Once the advantage has been obtained for City, it is child’s play to manage the advantage, raising and lowering the pace as they see fit.
A few minutes before half-time the 2-0 also arrives: thanks to Bernardo Silva, his fourth goal in his last 7 Champions League appearances (as well as in the previous 55 games played), with a nice shot from the edge. At the beginning of the second half, the villans close the gap with Watkins, good at exploiting an opportunity on a corner. The hosts attacked with their heads down, asked for a penalty in the 59th minute (contact on Konsa), and nearly equalized in the 79th minute with Chukwuemeka, who forced Ederson to save himself for a corner. Enough to win, not to convince. But Guardiola’s team is -1 from the top.
THE RACES AT 8.30 PM
–
Lively and perky the match between Southampton and Leicester, which ended 2-2: after a first missed opportunity by Salisu, the hosts took the lead on 3 ‘, with the first goal of the season by the Polish Bednarek. Leicester responded in the 22nd minute, with the goal of another central defender, Jonny Evans, also in his first joy of the season.
However, Southampton managed to get ahead already in the 34th minute, with a fine goal by Adams, who was good, on a cross from Redmond, to beat Schmeichel with a head. At the beginning of the second half (49 ‘) comes the 2-2 by Maddison, who uses the assist of Thomas to equalize. West Ham no longer wins, after losing the last two of the championship, Brighton stops at 1-1: decisive goals from Soucek (on 5 ‘) and Maupay (on 89’). The Londoners are thus confirmed fourth in the standings, but Arsenal, beating United, would overtake them.
