During conversations, ChatGPT will gain knowledge about the user, while giving them complete control over what information will be stored.
It is not wrong to say that ChatGPT currently does not have a “long-term memory“.
The chatbot does not have the ability to collect information during multiple conversations with the user, and also shows limitations in storing details within a single chat.
Recently however, OpenAI announced that it is busy testing a new function that would provide ChatGPT with extended memory precisely in this sense.
While this may raise some privacy and security concerns, the feature promises to offer a deep level of customization and convenience in future interactions.
Know by heart
The long-term memory function will allow ChatGPT to remember data relating to past conversations, in order to avoid the need to repeat information already discussed and also going to build a user profile including tastes, preferences and other details of private life.
For example, if a conversation mentions your job or hobby, artificial intelligence will remember this information and will be able to use them in future situations.
According to OpenAI, the information collected will be useful for training the digital assistant, so that improvements can arrive faster and closer to the needs of users.
Mode can be deactivated
Enabling deeper memory for ChatGPT could raise concerns, with fears of potentially disturbing “Black Mirror” scenarios.
However, OpenAI has made it clear that users will have full control over memory functions.
ChatGPT will remember by default, but you can turn the feature off completely via settings.
You will even have the possibility of creating a sort of “grey area” of information management, telling the chatbot what to remember and what not.
In addition to that, OpenAI introduced “Temporary Chat,” sort of incognito mode which allows you to have quick conversations without affecting ChatGPT's memory.
Currently, the feature has been rolled out to a select group of users using both free and paid plans, with plans to be available to a wider audience in the future.
