Volkswagen has decided: artificial intelligence will be the new co-pilot in some of its models produced by the automaker starting from the second quarter of this year. The German brand has collaborated with the US company Cerence, which develops voice assistant technologies specific to the automotive market, and the result will be a new voice assistant called Ida, capable of performing new functions and answering the most general questions.
Cerence has only existed as an independent entity since 2019, but it was created by Nuance Communications, the voice recognition company now owned by Microsoft, which worked with programs like Dragon and whose voice models helped train Apple's Siri. So high level pedigree.
VW says the first vehicles to have artificial intelligence on board will be those on the MEB and MQB Evo platforms: ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and the new Tiguan, Passat and Golf. In addition to the familiar features of an on-board assistant, Ida will be able to “answer general knowledge questions,” read content sought after for occupants, express vehicle-specific information and more.
Not only that: for security VW explains that “ChatGPT has no access to vehicle data; questions and answers are immediately deleted to ensure the highest possible level of data protection.” Will it be enough to reassure customers?
