The CES is the showcase in which the technological trends and the most innovative devices on the planet are shown every year. At the largest consumer electronics fair in the world, held annually since 1967, devices such as the VHS video recorder, DVD players, 3D printers and cable-free or roll-up televisions have been presented. The organizers of the event expect that more than 4,000 exhibitors and 130,000 attendees will gather this year between January 9 and 12 at the hotels and convention centers in Las Vegas (USA).
The fair will host more than 250 conferences and will have the presence of technological giants such as Panasonic – which has invited EL PAÍS to the event -, Samsung, LG, Google, Amazon, Accenture, Qualcomm and Hyundai. These and other companies will discuss and exhibit their inventions on an area equivalent to 43 football fields, according to Kinsey Fabrizio, senior vice president of the CES. Artificial intelligence, digital health, the smart home, sustainability and beauty technology are some of the big technological trends at the event.
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence has gradually crept into the daily lives of millions of users with systems such as ChatGPT or Google Bard, voice assistants, recommendation systems from platforms such as Netflix or smart home appliances. 27% of Americans think AI technologies already have a significant impact on their daily lives. This is what it indicates a report published by the CTA (the association of technology companies of the USA, organized by the CES), which highlights that many people consider artificial intelligence “innovative, futuristic and intelligent, but very few associate it with trust and security.”
“Consumers agree that regulation of artificial intelligence is necessary,” the report states. At the fair, this will be discussed and how this technology is revolutionizing different sectors will be analyzed. “Agriculture, accessibility, healthcare, and semiconductor companies are among those incorporating artificial intelligence to help solve social and efficiency challenges,” says Kelsey Kelly, policy program manager at CTA. This edition will also analyze the real and potential uses of generative artificial intelligence and will showcase all types of devices equipped with this type of technology: from televisions to speakers, headphones, cameras, cars, processors and robots.
Digital health
Healthcare is becoming more personal, portable and customizable, according to the CTA. Among the gadgets that grabbed attention last year, there were apps that analyze bowel movements, sensors that monitor urine in real time or devices the size of a credit card to perform electrocardiograms. In this edition of CES, other innovative devices will be exhibited such as a lipstick to diagnose conditions or an artificial intelligence that aspires to detect heart disease.
It will also be addressed How the latest advances can transform women's health, Mental health and assistance through smart home innovation. And there will be predictions. What will care be like in the future? For the CTA, even more “proactive, predictive and personalized.” The United Nations estimates that in 2050 there will be 3.7 million centenarians. “This growing population has new needs. Innovation, technology, social policy and the economy will help us face this new challenge,” she assures.
smart home
Homes are becoming more efficient. About 19% of American households already own a smart appliance, such as a refrigerator, washing machine, dryer or dishwasher, according to a survey. study published by the CTA in 2023. The technology is also present in lighting devices, curtains or irrigation and entertainment systems. This is the case of televisions, which now companies like Panasonic also want to convert into intelligent home management centers.
“Energy efficiency and automation are leading trends in this sector, and consumers prefer products that save time and money while improving safety and overall well-being,” states the CTA. In the conferences of this edition, we will analyze how technology can improve home security, What it can contribute to multifamily housing and How companies try to captivate new users.
Sustainability
The climate emergency is the greatest economic, social and environmental threat facing the planet and humanity, according to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction. “As calls to fight climate change intensify, technology companies are finding ways to become part of the solution,” CTA states. This year the association has recognized some devices as a electric loader, an autonomous robot to eliminate algae that deteriorate water quality either a starch-based alternative to plastic.
The fair will also address How technological innovation can improve some of the Earth's most valuable resources, like air and water. Also It will be analyz
ed whether the demand for electric vehicles is cooling after reaching record figures. Batteries for this type of vehicles and sustainability are among the priorities of exhibitors like Panasonic. Companies such as Genesis Systemswhich wants to generate fresh water from the air, or Nubilabwhich has created a food scanner with artificial intelligence to avoid food waste.
beauty technology
Last year L'Oréal surprised at CES with a makeup applicator for people with motor disabilities. “The goal is for them to be able to apply lipstick or mascara precisely,” explained employee Casey Barbarino. This year this French company has become the first beauty company to deliver a CES keynote speech. “The first wave of beauty technology changed the way people discover, evaluate and purchase beauty products. More recently, we have seen how it can better serve the underserved by democratizing skin health and increasing access to self-expression,” says Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO of the company.
In this edition, dozens of exhibitors will show their advances in beauty technology. Amore Pacific, for example, designs devices for skin care. This is the case of Tonework's Color Master, a device that performs a color analysis on more than 3,000 sections of the face and creates personalized makeup. Another exhibitor, ART Lab, has developed a chatbot that uses artificial intelligence to help customers with their skin problems and find the right cosmetics.
