For CDU boss Armin Laschet, the exploratory talks with the FDP are probably the last chance to hold onto his post. FDP boss Armin Lindner sounds anything but confident.
- Armin Laschet* leads the CDU* in the exploratory talks with the FDP*.
- If he Chancellor* wants to become, he needs both FDP and Green*.
- The explorations of the possible coalition partners after the Bundestag election 2021* have began.
+++ 10.30 a.m .: Before the new exploratory talks, leading FDP politicians expressed skepticism about the current state of the Union. FDP leader Lindner criticized deliberations in the CDU and CSU to wait and see whether negotiations between the Greens and the FDP with the SPD would possibly fail.
The Union must “clarify whether it pulls together,” said FDP General Secretary Volker Wissing to the newspapers of the Funke media group on Sunday (October 3rd, 2021). He emphasized, however, that his party was going openly in the upcoming exploratory talks with the SPD and CDU / CSU. For him, it depends: “The future government must be progressive and ready for reforms.”
CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak emphasized that his party continued to rely on a Union-led Jamaica coalition with the Greens and the FDP. “We want to make our contribution in a new future alliance to create something new for our country,” he told Bild am Sonntag. Therefore, the Union goes “with a great sense of responsibility” in the planned talks.
CDU explores with FDP: Lindner doubts the Union’s will to govern
Update from October 3rd, 2021, 8.30 a.m .: Before the exploratory talks even started, FDP leader Armin Lindner had already increased the pressure on the Union. “The CDU and CSU have to clarify whether they really want to lead a government,” said Lindner in an interview with Bild am Sonntag. “Some of the speeches from the CDU speculate that negotiations with the SPD should fail before the Union comes back into play. You can’t expect our country to do that. “
According to Lindner, the FDP is ready for serious talks with the CDU and CSU. The intersection of the liberals and the Christian Democrats is also greater than that between the FDP and the SPD. At the same time, the party leader pushed the pace. “The world is not waiting for us,” said Lindner, who called for a government to be formed “by mid-December”.
Exploratory talks between the Union and the FDP: Armin Laschet’s last chance
First report from October 2nd, 2021: Berlin – Armin Laschet puts everything on one card. Although the Union has achieved its historically worst election result in a federal election since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, there is still a straw to power for the conservatives who were unlucky in the election campaign: the Jamaica alliance of the CDU, the Greens and the FDP.
What speaks in favor of Laschet is that he is negotiating with two election winners. Both the Greens and the FDP recorded significant gains – and thus an implicit mandate to participate in a future federal government. And yet there is a small but important detail between the Rhinelander and his ambitions: Olaf Scholz* and his SPD, * who, from the role of the outsider, were able to win the Bundestag election.
In order to get into the Chancellery anyway, Laschet now needs more than just arithmetic. According to this, a traffic light government made up of the SPD, the Greens and the FDP would have more seats in the Bundestag, better approval ratings and, above all, a candidate at the top, for whom significantly more Germans had been able to warm up in polls during the election campaign and afterwards.

Armin Laschet wants to continue to become Federal Chancellor – the Greens and the FDP decide
And that’s how Olaf Scholz managed to get into pole position in the negotiations: first he can talk to the FDP, then Laschet. The fact remains disregarded that this time the “little ones” will probably decide who rules. In view of the fact that Laschet has to struggle with a clearly audible rejection within the party and in surveys, the CDU boss only has the game of one card: Chancellorship or nothing.
The first exploratory talks are expected with all the more excitement, which the strong “little ones” from the Greens and FDP are now with the formerly much more influential people’s parties from the CDU /CSU* and SPD lead. The election winner kicks off. Olaf Scholz now wants to talk to both the FDP and the Greens, the Union remains only a conversation with the FDP for the time being. This fact should not yet be seen as a sign of an open outcome, after all, FDP boss Lindner expressed his desire to govern with Laschet shortly before and after the election.
Armin Laschet before the end: The signs are on the traffic lights
And yet the signs of the times seem to be turning more and more towards traffic lights. This is supported by the fact that all three parties in such an alliance, i.e. the SPD, the Greens and the FDP, were strengthened by the electorate, whereas the Union had to accept significant losses including the loss of the top position. Above all, political and substantive demands such as a minimum wage of 12 euros for everyone, which the SPD and the Greens are calling for, whereas the FDP is blocking, speak against the traffic light. All of Germany is looking to Berlin these days. (Mirko Schmid) * fr.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
