Cars | FT: The automotive industry will suffer from a chip shortage at least until the end of next year

The demand for semiconductors used by the automotive industry is boosted by the transition to electric cars.

Cars and semiconductor manufacturers warn that the automotive industry will suffer from a shortage of semiconductors next year as well, tells British newspaper Financial Times (FT).

CEO of US semiconductor manufacturer Onsem Hassane El-Khoury tells the FT that it has already sold out of its production of semiconductors widely used in electric cars until at least the end of 2023 due to strong demand.

He says that the company increases its production every quarter, but “nothing can be done”.

Also CEO of Infineon, a German company focused on automotive semiconductors Jochen Hanebeck said recently in Munich that he expected a “fairly long-term” semiconductor shortage.

A similar message is heard from the automotive industry. CEO of auto giant Stellantis Carlos Tavares has said, according to the FT, that “chip restrictions” will torment the automotive industry next year as well.

Stellantis was born last year from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and the French PSA.

German Last month, Infineon announced that it would build a factory in Dresden for five billion euros. This is the largest investment in the company’s history.

Onsem CEO El-Khoury tells FT that it is expanding production at its factories in the Czech Republic, South Korea and the United States.

The expansions will increase the company’s production by 30 percent next year. They secure the deliveries of old customers.

The demand for semiconductors used by the automotive industry has been boosted by the transition to electric cars, which is expected to accelerate even more.

On the other hand, the demand outlook for semiconductors used by smartphones and computers is weaker. Taiwan’s TSMC, America’s Intel and South Korea’s Samsung have suffered from the drop in demand.

For example, TSMC has said that it will cut its investments by about 10 percent this year.
