The minister will take over the post left by Moraes in the 2024-2026 biennium; Nunes Marques is elected vice-president of the Electoral Court
O TSE (Superior Electoral Court) elected this Tuesday (May 7, 2024) minister Cármen Lúcia to the position of president of the Electoral Court. Alexandre de Moraes will leave his post on June 3rd. Minister Nunes Marques was elected to the position of vice-president, held by Cármen Lúcia.
The plenary voted on this Tuesday (May 7) in an electronic voting machine. By tradition, the current vice-president assumes the post of president in order of seniority of the ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in the Electoral Court.
Alexandre de Moraes, who on June 3 will have completed his 2nd biennium at the head of the TSE, congratulated the elected minister. The judge cited “tranquility, happiness and honor” to pass the chair to Carmen Lucia.
The current president of the Electoral Court said he still considers Carmen Lúcia one magistrate “exemplary” It is “bright”, both as a jurist and as a teacher. She also stated that the Electoral Justice and Brazilian democracy will be “in good hands”.
In his speech, Moraes also recalled that the minister was the 1st woman to preside over the TSE and the 2nd woman to be appointed president of the STF.
Carmen Lucia presided over the Electoral Court from 2012 (municipal election year) until 2014. She returned to the Court as effective minister in 2022.
As president, Cármen Lúcia will be at the head of the TSE during an election year, leading the 2024 municipal elections. Among the main topics debated for the election are the dissemination of fake news, hate speech on social media and advances in AI ( artificial intelligence) in the production of deep fakes.
