Carlos Sainz has scored a resounding victory for Audi in the Dakar. According to the old diehard, thanks in part to his son Carlos junior.
We have the Verstappens, but in Spain they have the Sainzen…Or Sainzs, Sainzes? Anyway, Carlos and Carlos, father and son. One former world rally champion and the other an F1 race winner for the Ferrari team. The Spanish matadors were not always popular in the Netherlands. After all, Carlos was the teammate at Toro Rosso and therefore a great competitor of our own hero. It has now become clear that both had a bright future in F1. Rare, because it certainly does not apply to all Red Bull talents.
The Sainz family has now become an indispensable part of motorsport. And somehow, you start to appreciate them for that alone. At least, that's what I notice in myself. That 'they're doing it again' idea. It I am inevitable principle. Also probably the reason why Trump becomes President again. People just vote for it because hey, if it happens, embrace it. It seems as if they achieve their goals solely on the basis of sheer willpower. And even if you are not or were not a fan, that in itself has a certain appeal.
Sainz also won the Dakar rally again this year, his fourth victory in the monster stage. In this respect too, it seems a lot more 'normal' than it actually is. Because yes, it was the fourth victory for Sainz senior. But El Matador has also been dropped very often in previous editions. Often with wrong strategies and crazy actions.
After his resounding victory for Audi, father Sainz claims that son Sainz played a major role in the victory. Especially because of something the younger of the two is also known for in F1: good strategic decisions. Carlos senior said he called Carlos junior every day. They also discussed the strategy for the day. Carlos junior often thought the plan was flawed and they adjusted it. Now that Carlos senior has won, he obviously says it all were the right choices:
He helped me tremendously. It's possible that I've never tackled the Dakar Rally so smartly. I want Carlos [junior] to thank. He is very mature and has a good mentality. We spoke before and after each stage. Carlos has been a great help. If I had a strategy, he sometimes partially or even completely refuted it. If we had to do it again, we wouldn't change the strategy. In that sense it was a good Dakar.

Whose deed. If that F1 career does get into the doldrums, Carlos junior can move on to the Ferrari pit wall. After all, the strategy could still use some improvement there.
