the portuguese Carlos Queiroz, former technician from Colombia, would be coach of Iran again, a team he managed for eight years, when the World Cup-2022 in Qatarreported the media close to the authorities.
“The Federation [iraní] will announce by the end of the week the nomination of Carlos Queiroz as coach of the national team,” reported Iran Varzeshi (Iran Sports), an Iranian government sports publication.
Queiroz must replace the Croatian Dragan Skocic, appointed at the beginning of February at the head of the team.
Fired on July 11, Skocic remained in the job anyway pending a successor.
“The new patron of the federation, Mehdi Taj, is seriously reflecting on the return of the Portuguese coach to “Tim-é Melli” (the name of the national team in Persian, NDLR),” the official Irna agency said on Monday.
In his election campaign, Mehdi Taj had presented the former Manchester United and Real Madrid coach as a “serious option” to lead the national team, praising the Portuguese’s record at the helm of Tim-é Melli, from 2011 to 2019.
Taj was elected on Tuesday as president of the federation, a position he had already held from 2016 to 2019.
Carlos Queiroz spent nearly eight years in charge of the Iran team, a record, leading them to two World Cup finals, in 2014 and 2018.
The “Tim-é Melli” qualified at the end of January for their sixth World Cup final phase, which will be played in Qatar (November 20-December 18). Iran will start the competition on November 21 against England, before facing Wales and the United States, in Group B.
