Carlos Alcaraz will be in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó in 2025. The Murcian – current number three in the ATP ranking – has confirmed his participation in the 72nd edition of this competition, which will be held on the courts of the Real Club of Tennis Barcelona-1899 from April 12 to 20. In this way, the 21-year-old tennis player will seek his third title in Barcelona in what will be his fifth participation.
The first was achieved in 2022 against Pablo Carreño (6-3, 6-2) and the second was achieved the following year against Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-3, 6-4). It should be remembered that Alcaraz could not be part of this year’s team due to injury, an edition in which Casper Ruud won.
After confirming that he will play on Barcelona clay in 2025, the Murcian has been “very happy” to be able to compete again and to be able to “fight to get” his third crown in Barcelona. In this sense, Alcaraz points out that it is a “very special” competition for him, “with a lot of history and that is played on courts” that he knows very well: “In addition, having all the affection of the people in the stands makes it still more emotional.”
“It is a very special tournament for me, with a lot of history and it is played on courts that I know very well since I was little.”
In fact, Carlos Alcaraz debuted on the courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 at the age of 11. Four years later he made his first appearance at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell-Trofeo Conde de Godó because the organization invited him. It was in 2019 and he played the qualifying phase, although he lost to the Portuguese Pedro Sousa.
In 2021 he was already part of the main draw, being defeated in the first round against the American Frances Tiafoe. Just one year later he won the title, a feat he repeated in 2023. To achieve the double, he had to overcome Nuno Borges, Roberto Bautista, Alejandro Davidovich, Daniel Evans and, ultimately, Stefanos Tsitsipas.
David Ferrer, sports director of the tournament, has celebrated the presence of the Murcian in the 2025 edition: “He is a unique player, with a lot of charisma and who also has fun on the court.”
“Carlos Alcaraz will be the great dominator of the circuit for the next ten years.”
“He has exceptional conditions to be able to dominate the point against any rival and that makes him different from any other player. And we are talking about the youngest tennis player in history to be number one in the world,” says Ferrer. Although he sees that “he still has a whole career ahead of him to continue improving and developing,” he is convinced that Alcaraz “will be the great dominator of the circuit for the next ten years.”
