“When it comes to cardiovascular disease, adherence to therapy is fundamental. We have many effective drugs, including new technologically advanced drugs that lower cholesterol with subcutaneous injections”. Thus Stefano Carugo, director of Cardiology at the Policlinico Milano, speaking at the presentation of the Novartis campaign ‘Da quore a cuore’ today in the Lombard capital, observes that “the problem is adherence to therapy because patients do what they want. Instead, we must insist on the indicated therapy”.
Equally important, according to the expert, is secondary prevention. “It means preventing a patient who has already had an event such as a heart attack or a stroke from having a second event – explains Carugo – The factors to keep under control are hypertension, diabetes and LDL cholesterol. The lower the bad cholesterol, the better. This means doing real secondary prevention”.
