An academy owner from New Jersey, United States, and former MMA fighter was sentenced to 41 months in prison this Wednesday, 10, for obstructing an official process and assaulting a police officer from the Metropolitan Police Department during the capitol riot – becoming the first person to be convicted of assaulting police authorities on that deadly day.
Scott Fairlamb, 44, pleaded guilty to the charges in August and his sentence will likely serve as a reference for dozens of similar cases. Fairlamb’s sentence is the longest of 32 riot-related penalties to date.

US District Judge Royce Lamberth told Fairlamb during the ruling that his actions hit “the heart of our democracy”. The businessman appeared to express remorse for his actions and took “full responsibility for what I did that day.”
Prosecutors said Fairlamb was one of the first people to invade the Capitol during the riot. As he left the building, he harassed a group of police officers trying to control the crowd and was also seen on camera punching a Metropolitan Police Department officer in the head.
Prosecutors said Fairlamb’s MMA experience made him “well aware of the injury he could have caused” the official. “His actions and words that day indicate a specific intent to obstruct a Congressional process through fear, intimidation and violence, including violence against uniformed officers,” they said.
Fairlamb, whose brother is a Secret Service agent who protected Michelle Obama, was known to have endorsed conspiracy theories QAnon online, including one claiming that former President Donald Trump would become president of the “new republic” in early March.
Before his arrest, Fairlamb owned the gym, which is now closed. About 140 police were attacked during the rebellion and five have died since. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick has died after protesters sprayed it with a chemical irritant, and the other four they committed suicide. More than 650 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riot on Capitol Hill.
