Police in the city of Windsor, Canada, began this Saturday morning (12) to remove trucks and other vehicles that have been blocking the Ambassador International Bridge, which connects the country to the United States, for six days, and were placed as part of protests against Canadian government measures to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. Images from Canadian television stations show dozens of police advancing towards about 100 protesters and dozens of vehicles blocking traffic.
As the police advanced, the protesters, who were opposed to the measures taken against the pandemic, slowly began to retreat, and two heavy trucks involved in blocking access to the bridge left the scene. Some of the protesters, many carrying Canadian flags, began singing the national anthem, while others questioned the actions of the officers, asking them “who are they working for”.
The police action came a day after Ontario Provincial Superior Court Judge Geoffrey Morawetz ordered protesting truck drivers to stop blocking the bridge by 7pm yesterday. Heeding the order, police distributed leaflets to truck drivers at night, warning that a state of emergency would take effect in Ontario starting this Saturday and that the blockade of the bridge was “illegal”.
