Since the beginning of November, with the arrival of the environmental police at the Água Sumida farm, in Brotas-SP, images of the abuse of more than 300 buffaloes have traveled throughout Brazil. However, there is more story behind the case.
On November 6, after an anonymous report reporting the mistreatment of animals, the Environmental Police went to the Água Sumida farm to investigate the occurrence. When arriving at the place, the agents came across 22 partially or totally buried buffalo carcasses, in addition to dozens of animals without water or food, apparently abandoned.

Another fact that caught the attention of agents was the small space that the animals were in, since most of the 500 acres of the property’s area were intended for planting. In all, 1,056 buffaloes, being 332 calves, were found.
According to the Environmental Police, the owner of the Farm, Luiz Augusto Pinheiro de Souza, said that the situation was the result of financial problems caused by the pandemic, which did not free him from receiving a R$ 2.13 million fine on the same day.
temporary prison
During the morning of November 11th, the Civil Police arrested Luiz Augusto for the crime of mistreatment of animals, an action that lasted less than 24 hours, when the owner paid a bond in the amount of R$ 10 thousand and was released.
animal status
In the early hours of November 15, dozens of volunteers began to treat the malnourished animals on the Água Sumida farm. Access that was limited, days later, by court decision.
On November 20, volunteers and NGOs who were taking care of the animals protested against the authorities. According to the protesters, government agents wanted to remove the recovery structure set up on the farm.
new prisons
On November 21, the Civil Police arrested two employees of the farm who did not give food and water to the animals. Days after the arrests, the court ordered the buffaloes to return to the owner of the farm, an action that outraged artists such as Xuxa Meneghel, Luana Piovani and other famous people.
On November 22nd, the court decided to hand over the guardianship of the buffaloes and another 72 horses, which were also on the farm, to the NGO Amor e Respecto Animal (ARA). The reconsideration of the sentence occurred because the investigation by the Civil Police concluded that the animals would again suffer abuse.
