Bruno Sacco, a famous automotive figure and long-time head of design at Mercedes, has died at the age of 90. Born in Udine in 1933, he trained in Turin, after being fascinated by the automotive world during a visit to the historic Salone. His career began first in Ghia and then in Pininfarina but the turning point came in 1957 when he obtained his first interviews with the Stella brand, and then began his career in Germany the following year.
Bruno Sacco’s career and the most significant models
At Mercedes he first started in the pre-bodywork development section and was later entrusted with responsibility for the Body Design and Dimensional Concept department. In 1975 he took the place of Friedrich Geiger, at the time style director for the German car manufacturer, starting a long career that would lead him to make a substantial contribution to the birth of various models that made the history of Mercedes: from the T version of the 123 series but also the SW 126 Class of 1979 and the SC Coupé of 1981. In the nineties it then contributed with an elegant but strongly identifying design to broaden the audience of Mercedes customers, including young people, with the arrival of models such as the 190 (W 201) but also the Class AW 168 from 1997, the Class MW 163 from 1997, the SLK R 170, the CLK W 208 from 1997 and the VW Class 638 from 1996. The latest models of which Bruno Sacco was responsible before retirement were the W 220 S-Class and the CL-Class of the C 215 series of 1998 and 1999 respectively. In 2007 he was entered into the European Automotive Hall of Fame in Geneva.
