The British government stressed yesterday that its position on the Middle East peace process has not changed, after Foreign Secretary David Cameron indicated that the United Kingdom may soon recognize a Palestinian state.
During a reception for Arab ambassadors in the British Parliament the day before yesterday, Cameron stressed the need to give “the Palestinian people a political horizon,” amid diplomatic efforts to end the war in Gaza.
He said that recognizing a Palestinian state would help make the two-state solution, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu currently rejects, “an irreversible process.”
He added: “We must begin to determine what a Palestinian state will look like, what its components will be, and how things will take place in it.” He went on to say: “As this happens, we will study with our allies the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state, including in the United Nations, and this may be one of the things that helps make this process irreversible.”
The Palestinian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Hossam Zomlot, considered Cameron’s statements an “important” moment.
