MEXICO CITY.- Eliminate the cargo operations of the AICM would make its customs more efficient, but moving operations to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) as the government claims, it would be complicated and would double the cost of operating for customs brokers.
To Philip Gonzalez, counselor of the Latin American Confederation of Customs Agents (CLAA), the complication would be for the personnel of the customs agencies, since the necessary routes do not exist so that the workers can move by public transport.
“How do they (customs agencies) get their staff there?”he questioned.
In addition, the customs agencies will assume a double cost, since they will have to put two cells of personnel and structure to attend any of the two points, González highlighted.
He recognized that customs at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) is already saturated.
“Customs is not bad, the infrastructure is the one that is no longer in line with today’s needs, it no longer has that capacity, it is exceeded. It is not a matter of efficiency,” he claimed.
He recalled that it was inaugurated in 1976 and currently has more warehouses that took away the functionality of the road and there are so many trucks that get stuck throughout the day.
Luis Ernesto Rodríguez, president of the Confederation of Associations of Customs Agents of the Mexican Republic (Caaarem), agreed that the AICM customs has been saturated for many years and has nowhere to grow.
“It must be taken into account that it is the most important air customs office in the country, and that logistically it serves the entire metropolitan area, this delays dispatch times and reduces the competitiveness of companies“, he asserted.
