Verstappen would not have won even without retiring
Strong emotions after the perfectly successful operation on March 19 for the removal of a benign heart tumor: Flavio Briatore welcomed with joy the result of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne which recorded a one-two for Ferrari with Carlos Sainz ahead of Charles Leclerc.
The red one-two (which was missing from the 2022 Bahrain GP) was facilitated by the Max Verstappen's retirement due to a problem with the right rear brake, but according to Briatore even without a technical problem it would have been difficult for the Dutchman this time to achieve the tenth consecutive victory between 2023 and 2024, a streak that would have equaled the one interrupted in Singapore the year last.
“Ferrari fantastic, I think Carlos Sainz was incredible who, from his hospital bed, recovered in a few days, he was formidable – the words of Briatore reached by the news agency Lapresse – a victory for the team, for two drivers in form, a victory that F1 needed. I believe that even if Verstappen had been in the race this time he would not have won, well done everyone.” Briatore believes the criticism that Sainz was dismounted to make room for Lewis Hamilton is out of place: “Do you have any regrets about the decision to let Sainz go at the end of the year? Let's just talk about a race, let's leave them alone. And we rejoice. Ferrari wins Constructors' title? I think so, it's the only team close to Red Bull. Let's now see the evolution of the next races.”
