After 2028, boxing will be part of the program of the summer games in Los Angeles. The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended the General Assembly to agree to an Olympic boxing tournament for the next games in the USA. The background to the decision is the preliminary recognition of World Boxing as an association partner within the Olympic movement, IOC President Thomas Bach said after the consultations in Pylos in Greek. “I am very confident that the session agrees,” he added. This means that the boxers all over the world have a chance of having a chance of the Olympics if their national association is a member of the new umbrella organization World Boxing.
As expected, the boxing association reacted relieved. “This is a very important and important decision for the Olympic boxing,” said President Boris van der Vorst. World Boxing will be a “trustworthy and reliable partner” who “complies and maintains the values of the Olympic Charter”. The foundation of the new association was preceded by a violent crush between the IOC and the now excluded International Boxing Association (IBA/formerly AIBA). This is criticized for corruption, management problems and distortion of competition. For the boxing tournaments in Tokyo in 2021 and three years later in Paris, the IOC was responsible. For Los Angeles 2028, however, the IOC boxing had initially no longer included in the competition program. The new World Boxing Weltverband, founded at the end of 2023, has more than 80 national member associations from five continents.
