Diego Botín and Florian Trittel have been awarded today with the prize Rolex World Sailors of the Year at the ceremony World Sailing Awards held at the historic CHIJMES Hall in Singapore.
The Spanish duo has had an exceptional year. Less than a month after taking the Spanish SailGP team from tenth to first place to win the SailGP circuit in its fourth season, they became Olympic 49er champions in the waters of Marseille. In the 49er season they also won the Semaine Olympique Francaise and the Princess Sofia Trophy.
The female version of the Rolex World Sailor of the Year award went to the Olympic gold in Paris 2024 Marit Bouwmeesterwho already has two awards after her victory in 2017. This year she became the most successful Olympic sailor of all time by winning the ILCA 6 gold medal in Paris 2024. Marit’s Olympic success has made her a model to follow, after she returned to competition following the birth of her daughter in time to begin preparations for this summer’s Games.
The Polish Ewa Lewandowska and the Singaporean Max Maeder They won the new Young World Sailor of the Year awards.
Ewa Lewandowska won gold in 29er at the Youth Sailing World Championships. Success came as a couple with Krzysztof Królik, with whom she started sailing in February and with whom she also won the European title and finished second in the 29er World Cup. Lewandowska also won world junior gold in December last year alongside Julia Maria Zmudzinska.
At 17 years old, Max Maeder is the current Formula Kite world champion, of the Asian, Asian and European Games, as well as an Olympic bronze medalist in Paris 2024. He won gold at this year’s World Cup in Hyères and his incredible career also includes victory in the KiteFoil World Series in Austria, gold in the 2024 Asian Championships, gold in the Asian Games and gold in the 2023 World Youth Sailing Championships. He is one of the most class regulars, with podiums in all events. He is the youngest world champion in an Olympic class and the youngest Olympic medalist from Singapore.
Winds of Change won the 11th Hour Racing Sustainability Award, NLcomp was named the first winner of the new World Sailing Technology Award, the Olympic champions Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti They took home the Team of the Year award, which adds to the Rolex World Sailor of the Year that they both won in 2022, Aiko Saito received the Beppe Croce Trophy in celebration of a career dedicated to sailing, and the Tunisian Olympian and president of the Tunisian Sailing Federation, Hedi Gharbiwas awarded the President’s Development Award.
The awards were decided by the combined verdicts of 49,964 votes from the public, which was a record participation in the history of this award, and a jury of experts.
World Sailing launched the World Sailing Awards in 1994 to recognize sailors for their outstanding achievements in the sport. Rolex has been a sponsor of the award since 2001, celebrating more than two decades of excellence and achievement in sailing.
