Her resistance to dismiss as president of the Parliament and her performance on the anniversary of 17-A have raised blisters in her party
The Junts leadership meets today for the first time after the summer holidays in a very tense climate because the party is unable to close its internal war. Laura Borràs is at the center of the struggle.
The president of the party has been in the eye of the hurricane all this summer. First, because she was suspended as a deputy and president of the Parliament with the endorsement of ERC, without causing an earthquake in the Government, as the nationalist leader advocated; and later, for her controversial performance in the act of homage to the victims of the terrorist attacks of 17-A. Borràs supported the radicals who boycotted the minute of silence. The leadership of the party left her alone, in a warning to future navigators. Just like when the judge opened an oral trial and the direction of the formation pressured him to take a step next to her. She resists and has already warned that she will not resign. In her first public appearance after being accused by broad sectors of the pro-independence movement of being a trumpist and populist for giving coverage to the radicals on the anniversary of 17-A, she warned that she is not willing to step aside, she dared to charge against ERC, Junts and the CUP , as if she were not the president of one of those three formations, and accused them of holding back independence.
His speech in Prada (France), at the Catalan Summer University, a nationalist forum, has been interpreted by pro-independence ranks as another step in the movement that has been preparing the ground for months to launch a fourth secessionist party. A fourth way that has the backing of the ANC and the most radical sectors, who brand the three parties with parliamentary representation (ERC, Junts and the CUP) as having given up on completing the ‘procés’. His anti-political discourse paves the way for an alternative list. It is not trivial that those who openly speak of a possible “split” in Junts are the leaders of the Borràs environment, such as Jaume Alonso Cuevillas.
There has been speculation for months about a fourth nationalist party. In the last Catalan elections, the independence movement lost 700,000 votes compared to the previous elections. The former president of the Parliament addressed this sector in Prada. They are the ones who are upset with ERC and Junts, because they consider that they have parked the ‘procés’.
Junts has a problem with Laura Borràs. The two sectors of the party – the former convergent leaders and the most radical of the former president’s entourage – continue to clash. They reached an agreement on the more or less equitable distribution of charges, but they only achieved a very fragile truce.
New way
The general secretary, Jordi Turull, tries to change the course of the party, tries to get away from the unilateralist rhetoric of recent years that Borràs still professes. Turull tries to ensure that Junts is seen as a serious government party, as was the CDC brand before the ‘procés’. Do not further narrow the political option, which is the third force in Parliament, after the PSC and the ERC.
The former president of the Parliament does not help in this purpose: she defends a very identity-oriented nationalist party project and the leadership seeks a way to progressively isolate her. But she clearly warned Prada: “I will not step aside.” In her party there is discomfort with her. She has been urged to resign as President of Parliament in order to elect a replacement. She resists and for now the presidency rests provisionally with ERC. She tried to force Junts out of the Government, but her party did not allow it.
Of course, this is one of the hot topics that is still pending in post-convergence training. The management will present an internal audit in the coming months to gauge the degree of compliance with the government pact with the ERC, especially with regard to the pro-independence agenda. Borràs presses for an internal consultation to be convened among the militancy to decide on the departure of the Government. In the direction they prefer to hold until the municipal ones. However, Esquerra is pressured to conclude the phase of dialogue with the Government, which in his opinion has been a failure, and begin to design a new attack. Puigdemont’s training sets the next 1-O as a turning point.
