Out of 400 places available in the Lampedusa migrant hotspot, there are currently around 2,500 people. Two massive landings in the last 48 hours have caused overcrowding on the island, where, moreover, the NGO ship financed by Banksy that rescued some small boats off the coast of Tunisia is located – subject to detention by the authorities. According to Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, this situation has arisen also because “there is the attractive factor of public opinion which includes acceptance of this phenomenon”.
In response to the co-director’s question Free Pietro Senaldi on why Italy is particularly involved in migratory flows, the former prefect of Rome explained: “Other countries are intransigent in a transversal way between different political positions. Now the theme has returned to the top of the European agenda and Giorgia Meloni must be acknowledged for the great merit she has.
Europe and the countries that mainly cross this theme must take a few more steps towards the inevitable selfishness of secondary movements according to the Dublin rule”. Speaking on a visit to the Lega’s political training school, Piantedosi reaffirmed the government’s line: “Meloni and I are making them understand that the only way to limit secondary movements is to block landings. We will not resign ourselves to allowing this to happen in the terms and numbers with which it is happening”.
The secretary of the Pd Elly Schlein criticizes the results obtained by the executive in Brussels: “The one with which the president Meloni returns from the European Council is a poor budget. The result not only of the choices and alliances made in recent years, but also of the propaganda and Eurosceptic attitude. The Italian government remains isolated in sharing responsibility for reception, with Italy forced behind nationalist walls”. Meanwhile, the Prefecture of Agrigento has ordered the transfer of around 300 people from the pavilions in the Imbriacola district to Porto Empedocle.
