The honorary citizenship granted to President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the city of Anquillara Veneta, Italy, in November 2021, became the subject of a legal dispute. According to Jamil Chade’s blog, at UOL, a popular action asks for the cancellation of the tribute.
The action is brought by residents of the city that is the birthplace of the Bolsonaro family and also of the Europa Verde Party. On the pretext of the Brazilian president’s Italian origin, the municipal government decided to pay tribute to Bolsonaro.

The popular action contains 23 pages and denounces the mayor, Alessandra Buoso, and eight councilors who make up her government. The document asks for the annulment of citizenship as it considers that the city’s image has been damaged after the association with Bolsonaro.
The mayor belongs to the Liga party, led by Matteo Salvini, an admirer who personally welcomed Bolsonaro on his visit to Italy. The city hall’s headquarters was spray-painted with the phrase “Fora Bolsonaro” in a protest taken on by the activist group Rise Up 4 Climate Justice.
