Petista stated that his opponent invented “lies throughout the campaign” and then “fled” the country
The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), described the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as a leader “no emotional control” that fueled the January 8th attacks with “campaign lies”. In interview The CNNthe PT member spoke about the extremist acts in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília, stating that he did not imagine that the opposition had escalated in that way.
“I didn't imagine that ignorance had reached such a point, you know, that a president without emotional control, demoralized by the amount of lies told throughout the campaign, would have invented something like that. And what's shameful is that he invented it and ran away. He didn’t have the courage to participate,” stated last Friday (5.Jan.2024).
The PT member was referring to the time when Bolsonaro was in the United States. The former president traveled out of the country shortly after the results of the presidential elections were announced, in December 2022. When the invasion of public buildings was recorded in Brasília, Bolsonaro had not yet returned.
The president recalled the moment he found out about what was happening in the country's capital. Lula was in Araraquara, in the interior of São Paulo, to monitor the situation of a stream that had been destroyed by a strong storm in the region.
“I was warned by people watching television at city hall that they were invading the buildings. Then I went to the television room and watched the invasion of the palace, I watched the demonstrations, everything. I called some people here, I called Flávio Dino, some other people called me. And it was a moment of tension, something I didn’t imagine could happen in Brazil again.”he said.
Lula also spoke about his experience in previous elections, when he lost 3 elections for the presidency. “When we lost, we went home and cried our sorrows”he stated.
