“Do you remember when a person washed their hands, what happened to our Jesus”, said the president during an event in Natal
The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) compared on Wednesday night (14.Sep.2022) the omission in an election with the death of Jesus Christ. Bolsonaro participated in the event “Women for Brazil”, in the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Natal.
During the event, Bolsonaro cited Chile and said that the country used to be “Well dressed” in the economic sector, but that the people omitted. Then he compared the situation to the death of Jesus. “Back there, you remember when a person washed his hands, what happened to our Jesus”declared.
The president’s speech is in reference to the biblical character Pontius Pilate, Roman governor in Judea. According to the book, at the trial of Jesus, Pilate washed his hands and handed Christ over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified for “calm the crowd”.
For this reason, the governor is known by Christians as an example of omission, giving rise to the expression “wash hands” to designate when someone excuses himself from blame for something that may be his responsibility.
The chief executive has already criticized Chile on other occasions and has also spoken of the alleged abstention of the right in the 2021 elections, responsible for taking left-wing candidate Gabriel Boric to the country’s presidency. Bolsonaro was the last Latin American head of state to congratulate Boric on his victory.
Despite Bolsonaro claiming that a high abstention from the right was responsible for electing Boric, the turnout for elections in the country was the highest in the last 30 years. According to preliminary data released by Servel (Chile’s Electoral Service) at the time of the dispute, the 2nd round had the participation of 55.4% of the population, representing 8.3 million people. Voting has not been mandatory in Chile since 2012, so the turnout of Chilean voters used to be even lower.
At the event, the president also asked the public for votes for October 2 and said that the continuation of his policy depended on the audience. The PL (Liberal Party) candidate also campaigned for his allies: the former Minister of Regional Development and candidate for the Senate, Rogério Marinho (PL); and candidate for state government Fábio Dantas (Solidarity). Both were present on stage.
Female and Christian electorate
The event “Women for Brazil”, held in the North Zone of Natal, was another effort by Bolsonaro in an attempt to win over the female electorate. The president has been focused on retaining women’s votes since the beginning of his pre-campaign, as polls of voting intentions have shown the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), Bolsonaro’s biggest rival in the dispute for Palácio do Planalto, leading among the female audience.
Accompanied by First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro, the president thanked God for being by his side. The first lady has been a key player in the current chief executive’s campaign, due to her “positive image”. For this reason, Michelle has been prominent in the party’s strategy to try to re-elect Bolsonaro. Read more about:
