The Bolivarian Games have evolved. They are not just small, in which athletes from only five countries competed for gold. Today, in Valledupar there are athletes from 11 countries, which makes the tests much more competitive.
Venezuela had an overwhelming dominance for 13 editions, but Colombia has taken the lead and has won the Trujillo 2013 and Santa Marta 2017 fairs and in Valledupar it should not have a close rival.

The Games are not the Cinderella of the Olympic cycle. Usually, the Bolivarians have been the first step towards the appointment in the Olympic Games and that is why the countries that take part in them go with everything in search of their best figuration.
The contribution of the fair is valuable for each of the delegations. In Colombia, for example, it is the cut for what is to come.
In this edition, 650 athletes compete for the country, who want to earn a place to follow the path towards the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Whoever wants to follow the course towards the big event in France, must pass the first exam in the Bolivarianos. The one who does not meet the objective is not that he is left out of the option of continuing towards the South American Games, Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games.
“The Bolivarians are good for us because they mean the start of a new period for the country’s sport. Valledupar is the first large scale and here athletes can see where they are or what to improve for future events. It is the option of looking ahead to the South American Games and others, that is why they are key”, said Cirio Solano, president of the Colombian Olympic Committee.
The goal of winning the medal table indicates that each participating country comes to the event with the best, and Colombia does not escape it.
First step
For the sport of the country, the Bolivarians are important because it is the beginning of the activity at a high level that athletes who until now begin to carve their way.
Valledupar is the first step for young people like Jimena Leguizamón, who won five medals at the last South American Youth Games in Rosario (Argentina).
They will also have the opportunity to debut in the Olympic cycle and find out what athletes like Stefanía Gómez (swimming) and Juliana Lozada (table tennis) are made of, who were also in Rosario.
For them, continuing the maturation process is key and the Bolivarianos are a good option to test conditions, measure themselves against rivals they have faced and will continue to measure in the future.
The supremacy of the sport in the area is at stake and that is another plus. Winning the Bolivarianos means that the delegation is the best in this part of the world and that serves to reach the South American Games and the rest of the events of the cycle with bigger goals.
The fight has always been centered between Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Panama and Colombia, but now more countries are joining, such as El Salvador, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, something that makes the Games great, there are more athletes , more dispute and delivery.
The Bolivarian Games are necessary, not only for the competition, but because they serve so that the athletes of the area have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities and win.
This time the Bolivarians become important, because this Olympic cycle is shorter, It is not four years, due to the Tokyo Games being held in 2021 and not in 2020, as planned.
That forces time not to be wasted, so that each competition of this nature must be used to the fullest.
