Bodegas Alodia takes another step in sustainability by becoming the first in Aragon and the third in Spain to use a cardboard wine bottle instead of conventional glass ones.
This Frugal bottle, with a British patent, has been chosen by Bodegas Alodia to reinforce its commitment to sustainable wines, since this format is made in a 90% with recycled material forks almost 100% recyclable. It consists of three parts: cardboard exterior, food bag interior and plastic neck that are deposited in the corresponding containers for recycling.
Furthermore, the bottle reduces carbon footprint by 84% in relation to the manufacture of traditional wine bottles and also Reduce transportation costs due to its reduced weight by not exceeding 85 grams per unit.
The cardboard wine bottle still attracts attention in Aragon and Spain, although it is already More than 50% of global consumption is made in formats other than traditional glass containers.. However, it is a traditional sector in which “it is difficult to penetrate other containers even if they have characteristics that make it suitable”, especially for aged and young wines with a certain acidity, says Beatriz Martínez, owner of Bodegas Alodia, to theEconomist
However, little by little it is making its way into the market. “In the spring of last year, in wine competitions, there was talk about this container entering Norway, which is a customer of Spanish wine. This suggests that in the medium term it will have a market presence. The DOs will have to take this step”, since the regulations now require a bottle of wine.
“It is the response to the need to improve, to adapt to new times, to offer new formats to new consumers”, in addition to reinforcing the sustainable commitment of Bodegas Alodia, which already in 2021 began its project to expand the winery on the basis of sustainability, carbon footprint reduction and economic responsibility for which it has already achieved the RSA seal, he explains.
Bodegas Alodia currently sells its wines at the points of sale of Cabrero e Hijos (Alto Aragón) in Huesca, and at the Alacena de Aragón in Zaragoza. It comes in a 750 ml format, just like traditional bottles. It is an oak red wine that has also been made in part with grapes parraletaone of the native varieties of Somontano, the area in which Adahuesca, headquarters of this family winery business, is located.
The winery, from the DO Somontano, has also taken other steps in sustainability such as labels and waste recycling such as the skins that are used as fertilizers, as well as the pruning that remains on the farm. In addition, their wines are sustainable.
In fact, “we have always had a solid commitment to the sustainability and biodiversity of Somontano.” Currently, 80% of its wines are destined for the local market, although it also exports 20% mainly to Holland and Belgium.
Bodegas Alodia began its journey in 2005 with the objective and philosophy of recover ancestral varieties of Somontano (Alcañón, Moristel and Parraleta), and the production of unique wines.
In fact, it uses these varieties in more than 80% of its wines, taking them to unusual vinifications until now such as aging in spherical concrete tanks, outdoor aging in demijohns, carbonic maceration or natural sparkling (champenoise method). Production is between 25,000 and 30,000 bottles of wine.
In 2014, the winery also opted for wine tourismwith its facilities including a winery, restaurant and a 150 square meter store.
