The American artist Jeff Koons he is one of the leading exponents of the neo-pop current, tending towards kitsch, of contemporary art. His irony towards consumerism and the American way of life was shown through painting and sculpture. Koons has a very good relationship with BMW, a car manufacturer for which it has already ‘painted’ some models. Today the Bavarian company announced a new collaboration, based on a M850i xDrive Gran Coupé called ‘THE 8 X JEFF KOONS‘. According to BMW, it is the most elaborately designed vehicle in the entire history of the brand. It will be presented for the first time to a global audience at Frieze Los Angeles.
Jeff Koons said: “My edition of the BMW 8 Series is the car of my dreams! It is truly unique and I have been wanting to create a special BMW edition for a long time. It is sporty and flashy, but also minimalist and conceptual. I can’t wait to get in and drive it, and I hope people enjoy the Gran Coupé as much as I do. On the car, the lines get bigger and bigger on their way from the hood to the trunk, creating a sense of forward motion, just like the design elements reminiscent of steam jets and ‘POP!’. The blue color is reminiscent of the vastness of space and I love the idea that the car is a global car. What matters is how we relate to the awareness of everything around us. For the driver and for all passengers, the sense of pleasure is high. This is what my car has to offer“.
The design combines eleven different exterior colors ranging from blue to silver and yellow to black. The multi-colored interior is made of high-quality materials, fine leather and a cup holder lid with an edition reference badge and the artist’s signature. The seats are painted in shades of red and blue reflecting the colors of comic book superheroes as well as those of BMW M high-performance vehicles. Highly skilled professionals have employed over 200 hours of manual work in the BMW factories in Dingolfing and Landshut only for exterior painting, where color samples were often applied with magnifying glasses. The artist himself spent several days at the Dingolfing plant over several months discussing design options with involved BMW employees.
Each vehicle that will be sold in this livery will be supplied with a large format certificate signed by Jeff Koons, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse and the vehicle’s serial number. The artist also designed the cover of the driving manual. An additional signature of the artist is embedded in the cup holder panel. Initially, THE 8 X JEFF KOONS will be on display at Manhattan’s Rockefeller Plaza before an edition vehicle, signed on the rear hood by Jeff Koons, is auctioned at Christie’s in New York on April 4. All proceeds from the winning bid will go to the International Center for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC).
