The radical Taliban movement (which is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) violated its obligations by “accepting and hiding” in Kabul one of the leaders of the terrorist group “Al-Qaeda” (banned in Russia) Ayman al-Zawahiri. This was announced on Monday, August 1, by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.
“By hosting and hiding the leader of al-Qaeda in Kabul, the Taliban grossly violated the Doha agreement and their repeated promises to the world that they would not allow terrorists to use Afghan territory to threaten the security of other countries,” he said.
Blinken also stressed that the Taliban had betrayed the Afghan people and their own stated desire for recognition of power by other countries and normalization of relations with the international community.
Earlier in the day, US President Joe Biden said that the counter-terrorism operation to eliminate one of the leaders of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was a success in all aspects.
He stressed that the United States will never allow Afghanistan to become a haven for terrorists again.
On Monday, the Associated Press reported that the United States had eliminated one of the leaders of the al-Qaeda terrorist group, Ayman al-Zawahiri, in Kabul.
At the same time, on June 15, Secretary of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev said that the United States created the terrorist organizations Al-Qaeda and the Taliban (which is under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) and use them for their own purposes.
Prior to this, on December 3, the United States launched a strike in Syria targeting a senior member of the al-Qaeda terrorist group.
Meanwhile, a US airstrike on October 22 killed a high-ranking al-Qaeda leader in northwestern Syria.
On September 28, U.S. military general Mark Milley said that the radical Taliban had not cut ties with the al-Qaeda terrorist network. He also noted that terrorists can restore the ability to organize attacks from the territory of Afghanistan.
On July 20, 2021, the United States launched an airstrike against an al-Qaeda-linked group in Somalia. It was the first military action under President Joe Biden against an affiliate of a terrorist group.
