The bladder is the organ that has the task of collecting urine which is filtered by the kidneys before being eliminated from the body. The tumor consists of the malignant transformation of the cells that cover the internal surface. In 2023 they were approximately 29,200 new cases of bladder cancer diagnosed in Italy – he says Sergio Bracarda, president of the Italian Society of Uro-Oncology (SIUrO) -: 23,300 among men and 5,900 among women. The risk of developing the disease is much higher in men, while for the number of new male cases minimal reduction, in women there is a slight but progressive increase. An increase which, as happens in lung cancer, can largely be explained by the growing number of smokers: In fact, tobacco is correlated with at least half of all urinary tract tumors.
Five years after diagnosis in our country 80% of patients live (the European average 68.6%, that of Northern Europe 73%).
