A new trailer for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” came out this Monday, October 3. In addition to showing us Shuri taking on the role of the Black Panther, this sneak peek gives us another look at namor, the antagonist played by Tenoch Huerta. Something that surprised many was that said character was introduced as “Kukulcan, the feathered serpent god.”
As we have been shown, the Namor of the UCM shows a greater inspiration in ancient Mesoamerican cultures, and a new example of this is the mention of a deity that was worshiped by the Mayan civilization in real life. Although you did not know it, said mythological being has also had more than one appearance in Marvel comics.
Who is Kukulcan?
Kukulcan was a feathered serpent deity in the mythology and religion of many Mesoamerican cultures and particularly of the Yucatecan Mayansalthough some experts believe that his cult could originate among the Olmecs or Toltecs. He was the god of rain, wind, storms and life.
In the Mayan worldview, Kukulcan He was one of the creator gods and taught human beings different activities for their survival, such as the ability to produce fire. For this reason, he was worshiped with various offerings and even with human sacrifices.
The famous pyramid Chichen Itza it was dedicated to this god, and it was thought that it came down from it during equinox nights. He was depicted as a serpent because he was believed to connect the gods with humanity. Some experts believe that it is the same god that the Aztecs called Quetzalcoátl.
But Mayan mythology also mentions a warrior named Kukulcán, who would have been the founder of Chichén Itzá in the 10th century, and in whose honor there are temples in places like Uxmal and Mayapán. This character seems to have many similarities to the Namor from “Black Panther 2″.
Kukulcan at Marvel
The god Kukulcan first appeared in Marvel comics in 1966’s X-Men #23, in which he was also called Ahau. Among the powers of this version of the character are immortality, flight, superhuman strength, resistance to various diseases and the manipulation of wind and energy.
Kukulcan and Namor in “Black Panther 2″
In the trailer for “Black Panther 2″, M’Baku mentions a leader whose people did not know him as a general or as a king, in clear reference to Namor, whom he indicates they call “Kukulcán, the feathered serpent god”. “Killing him… would risk an eternal war,” he adds.
Immediately, fans began to discuss various theories on the subject on social networks. One of them indicates that Namor would actually be the avatar of Kukulcán, as happened in “Moon Knight” with the main character and the Egyptian god Jonsu.
