Fifteen years ago the gaming world was rocked by the release of BioShock.
The beginning of the story is known to all: in the mid-40s Andrew Ryana supporter of individualism and rational selfishness, tired of the chains imposed by governments, laws and religions, decides to escape from superpowers and the useless and limiting superstructures of society to create a utopian underwater city, Rapture. A place to invite extraordinary men and women: the brightest minds, the most capable scientists, the most visionary artists, the most gifted athletes, the most famous singers, to form the superior society idealized by Ryan.
However something has definitely not worked out and in the early years and Rapture turns into a hell of survival and death. The triggering cause of this disaster is Adam, a substance derived from stem cells produced by some rare marine snails capable of modifying the human genetic code by treating it from diseases such as cancer and giving it superhuman psychophysical abilities. And the production of this substance becomes a cause of war between Ryan and Fontaine, a capitalist who has moved to the city, while the Adam transforms the inhabitants of the city into monstrosities called Recombinants. The protagonist of the game, Jackfinds himself in all this by chance after a plane crash which for the players means the beginning of an incredible journey among disturbing Little sisterslethal Big Daddy and powerful plasmids.
This incredible IP comes from the mind of Ken Levine, now a real legend of the gaming world who is now working on a new mysterious IP that we have told in a long article entitled BioShock, Rapture, Columbia and …? The narrative revolution of Ken Levine and Ghost Story Games.
Other developers of the saga, on the other hand, after the dissolution of Irrational Games, have been included in a team that is developing a new BioShock that could be set in Antarctica and called BioShock Isolation. However, both titles, which could be morally and technically two sequels to Bioshock Infinite, are shrouded in mystery to the chagrin of insiders and fans.
BioShock for now remains only a videogame memory. A fantastic memory to live and relive while waiting for a return that hopefully is even more magnificent.
Happy Birthday Rapture, Happy Birthday Little Sisters and Happy Birthday Big Daddy. Happy Birthday BioShock!
