Do not answer the message because it is an extortion attempt to get your money
If you receive an email notification from the Civil Guard about a court summons, do not click because it is an extortion attempt. Through their Twitter account they have warned about this scam that the Internet Security Office detected but that still continues to reach users.
The cybercriminals behind the scam send a false report of sexual crimes by calling the Civil Guard. Although it is carried out through the ‘phishing’ method, this deception entails a crime of extortion and anyone could be a victim of it, since in reality there is no investigation, but it is the pretext used to generate concern to the receiver of the mail and that this gives signals that the mailbox is active.
“If you have received the email, do not answer and delete it,” warns the Civil Guard. The Internet Security Office adds that you should not respond since your response “helps cybercriminals to know if the account is active and continue with the deception.” The scam email is sent from a possibly randomly generated fake email account, as the domain has nothing to do with an official law enforcement address.
Generally, the subject of the message includes the following: ‘you are summoned’ or ‘File No. – XXX’ where XXX are random numbers, although it is not ruled out that there are other emails with similar subjects. The email is misspelled. This is a way to know that it is a false notification since it is most likely a translation.
If you have responded to the email, you have fallen into the trap and made a payment to solve the problem, you must save all the evidence to present it when you report it to the State Security Forces and Bodies (FCSE).
