A scene from “Ugly Betty” inspired by a true story
The one who shared stories about the making of “Betty, la fea” was Natalia Ramírez, an actress who played Marcela Valencia. In a conversation with the Colombian journalist Carlos Ochoa, he recalled, among other things, how an anecdote by Fernando Gaitán, creator of the telenovela, was used as a basis to create one of the most iconic scenes of the telenovela.
“The scene where Armando Mendoza dresses up as a drag queen is something that happened to Fernando. He didn’t have to wear the same clothes, but he did dress like a baby. While he was arguing with Esperanza (his wife) on the phone, someone locked his car and he had to take a taxi wearing those clothes. Everything that happened to Armando was what he happened to ‘Fer,’” he explained.

In the scene in question, Armando pays Hugo Lombardi a bet and agrees to dress up as a drag queen. After attending a party, he tells the designer that he has to go, since Marcela was waiting for him. Upon leaving, he realizes that the cars had blocked his and had to ask Betty for help to get him out of the place.
