Betting, Tonali: “I made a mistake, but hiding is never the solution”
Sandro Tonali talks about the path to recovery from gambling addiction. Newcastle midfieldercurrently disqualified for the betting affair, met the students of the ‘Salvemini’ high school in Bari as a stage in the rehabilitation process envisaged by the FIGC and addressed the topic in a very direct manner.
“Maybe among you there is someone who bets and doesn’t say it, because we often close ourselves off – the words of the former Milan midfielder -. However, when you play and have a high salary, dealing with gambling is a risk around the corner. I hid and I made a mistake. You don’t stop yourself, others stop you. And you can also jeopardize friendships, relationships and work. Those are some of the biggest risks.”
“Hiding behind the barriers of a problem is never the solution – continued Sandro Tonali -. We need to talk about it instead. Get help. My true wealth is not million-dollar contracts, but being surrounded by people who love me and continue to demonstrate it to me every day.”
Tonali wants to put this period behind him and look forward: “I recently went to a factory, I was able to reflect on how many work ten hours a day just to bring home a salary. I understood many precious things. One above all: if a worker lost his job, his entire family would pay the consequences. Well, this is also why I consider myself lucky. I made a mistake, but I didn’t lose anything.”
On the differences between Italy and England: “In England football is more tiring but there is less pressure. Win or lose, in the evening you can still live your life. In Italy if things go badly, you often can’t leave the house. Here , we must all grow together for the good of our football and our society.”
