The 23-year-old from Cavalese is one of the first 5 to have signed for the Fiamme Gialle. “It’s not just an economic question”
The star of our Winter Paralympic Games, in Beijing 2022, is unquestionably Giacomo Bertagnolli, 23, who has already won two medals (silver in super-G and gold in Supercombinata, with the giant and slalom expected for Thursday and Saturday), among the reasons of pride for these performances also the fact of having recently joined the Fiamme Gialle, after the approval of the law that equates Olympic and Paralympic athletes within all military bodies. They will wear the yellow-green colors: Martina Caironi, Oxana Corso and Ambra Sabatini for athletics, Luigi Beggiato for swimming and Giacomo Bertagnolli for alpine skiing, winners of the specific competition announcement published on January 3.

“Finally I would like to say – says Giacomo from China -. I signed a few days before the Paralympics. It is a great thing because it gives the Paralympic athletes the opportunity to be part of the military corps. The first advantage is to take the sport even more professionally. Because you can focus on the sporting part without having to worry about how to earn a salary at the same time. And not everything is tied to achieving a sporting result. A salary that allows me to live, but also to train, take care of the details just to get to the top of the condition in big events. This has been happening for years for able-bodied athletes who, when they got results, were included in the military corps. A question of image certainly, but also an economic question. And apart from the salary, what is equally important is the equalization with able-bodied athletes. This also serves to break down some of those barriers that still exist. There will still be a lot of work to be done, but this is already a fundamental step “.
