The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, was slightly injured in a traffic accident that occurred this Friday in the city of Ramle, where he had gone to visit the scene of a terrorist attack in which a woman was stabbed. Apparently, the minister’s official car ran a red light and ended up overturned after allegedly colliding with another vehicle. The most unique thing is that Ben Gvir’s escorts have denounced on more than one occasion their habit of ordering them to commit traffic violations.
The minister had gone to this city in central Israel where an individual stabbed a woman in the street this Friday, for no apparent reason, causing various wounds. According to security forces, it was a terrorist attack, although they admitted that the perpetrator was “emotionally unstable.” After the attack, several relatives of the victim went out in pursuit of the aggressor, who while fleeing tried to stab another pedestrian. At that moment, one of his pursuers, who had a weapons license, took out the pistol he had on him and shot him with a fatal shot.
Ben Gvir spoke for a few minutes with the victim’s family and the Police, whose work he praised. He then got into the black sedan and drove away from him. Just a few meters. Then the accident occurred, the causes of which are under investigation. However, according to the images of a video camera belonging to a car parked at the place, it is observed that the minister’s vehicle, arriving at a crossroads between two avenues, slows down at a red light, but does not stop for complete. Upon entering the intersection, a car manages to avoid it, but another hits it from the side and causes the official vehicle to overturn dramatically. Pieces of bodywork and windows are flying everywhere. The minister’s security car circulates behind, which also passes the traffic light improperly, but manages to avoid the collision.
Apart from the head of Israeli security, one of his daughters, a bodyguard and the driver were traveling in the sedan. All of them suffered injuries. A television channel noted that, apparently, none of them were wearing seat belts, although this was not reflected in the video. The driver of the other car, whose front was destroyed, was also injured. The minister’s cabinet indicated that he only suffered minor injuries and that he would spend the night under observation at the Shamir Medical Center, near the scene of the accident.
The accident has brought to the fore Ben Gvir’s apparent penchant for disregarding traffic signs. In August of last year he also suffered another accident for running a red light because he was late for an interview. It’s not the first time. The head of National Security has other infractions on trips not considered emergency, such as interviews with the media or Parliament meetings.
It turns out that Ben Gvir, a late driver who began getting behind the wheel in 2000, has since committed 78 irregularities on the road, according to public broadcaster Kan. Among them, breaking into intersections with a red light –apparently one of his most common ones–, skipping continuous lines, driving at high speed or using his cell phone while driving.
The situation has become intolerable for those around them. In September, the Shin Bet, the national Intelligence agency that is in charge of protecting the country’s top political figures, already filed a complaint with the prime minister’s office. The complaint indicated how the far-right minister used to give his drivers orders to commit traffic violations. «He drives as if he were the prime minister. There is no possibility of him being stuck in traffic,” an anonymous source told ‘Haaretz’, a leading newspaper in Israel, where the caller added: “This will one day end in disaster.”
Ben Gvir, a member of the ultra wing of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Government, is Minister of Security, paradoxically after in his youth he had multiple altercations with the authorities due to his participation in radical acts of the extreme right. He was accused more than fifty times during his youth, mostly for hate speech. He gained popularity for his participation in television talk shows, which called him because his agitating nature inflamed debates and raised audiences. Since the beginning of the war he has made statements such as advising to “shoot in the head” women and children who approach the Gaza fence or decreeing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners to alleviate the saturation of the prisons. .
