Although this trip came to light last Friday, there was no official confirmation of it until early Sunday night. for security reasons, the same reason why the Government had not confirmed the date initially planned for this visit, May 17. past.
That date had to be postponed due to the situation that Ukraine was experiencing due to the new front opened by Russia in the northeastern Kharkiv region.
Both will sign a security agreement, similar to the one that Ukraine is signing with other countries and by which Spain is committed tocontinue providing military support to Ukrainian forces.
Spain has been sending weapons to Ukraine and last week the Ministry of Defense reported the shipment of a new batch of Leopard tanks and various types of ammunition, such as 155 mm artillery or a new shipment of Patriot anti-aircraft missilesas well as anti-drone systems, optronic surveillance and tracking systems and remote weapon turrets.

Added to this was the announcement that Spain will undertake the training of 400 new Ukrainian soldiers, who will join the 4,000 who have already received training in Spanish territory.
Zelensky’s visit is the first official bilateral visit to Spain, although he was already last October in the city of Granada (south) for the summit of the European Political Community, during the Spanish presidency of the Council of the EU.
Sánchez has reiterated Spain’s support for Ukraine, as he confirmed to Zelensky in the telephone conversation they had on May 7 and in which he guaranteed that support for as long as necessary.
The President of the Spanish Government reported that in that conversation they talked about the progress of the security agreement between Spain and Ukraine that will be signed this Monday in Madrid
After the meeting with Sánchez, the Ukrainian president will travel to the Royal Palace to hold a meeting with Felipe VI, and there will later be a lunch in his honor offered by the kings.
Afterwards, Zelensky will go to the Congress of Deputies, where he will be received by its president, Francina Armengol, and will visit the Chamber, sources from the Presidency of this institution informed EFE.
