The Koponen effect was seen in full force on Tuesday in Tampere.
Pyrinth – Seagulls 72–115
Rarely the galleries of Pyynikki Ballroom have been as crowded on a regular Tuesday night in October as they were on Seagulls ’visit this time.
Of course, this was not an ordinary match in the Basketball League. In the struggle between Pyrinto and Seagulls, a special attraction was Petteri Koposen return to Tampere in the spirit of a domestic serial game after a break of more than a decade.
For the neutral spectators, Koponen gave exactly what was hoped for – one throw after another sank through the basket ring, and a total of 27 points were easily accumulated.
As a team, Seagulls tried three-point throws for an amazing 56 times and immersed 31 of them. Both are new Basketball League records.
“After all, the day is still tomorrow,” the local rock legend’s hit summed up the feelings of the Pyrinth-minded after the match ended.
First took the reins from the domestic national team stars instead of Koponen Shawn Huff, which made the guests’ first nine points seven.
Koponen started the match from the substitution bench. Once on the field, he quickly showed with two ridiculously easy-looking three-point throws why the threes had sunk in the Euroleague at their best with exceptional precision.
Pyren’s place defense left plenty of room for other Seagulls throwers behind the line, often after just one or two passes. In the opening quarter alone, the people of Helsinki tried to throw three points a total of 14 times, of which six went in.
When Koponen left back to the bench two minutes before the break, he already had 21 points in the pile – seven three-point attempts, all successful. The 33-year-old rearman was waiting for the ball for himself in the corner, and after receiving it, the throwing movement left time and again as casually as in the warm-ups as such.
To another At the end of the half, Pyrinty did not make his attack go beyond the defense or the defense. Sturdy Canadian Pier only Shaquille Keith was able to defy Seagulls’ defense in some way.
When the match reached a full 28 minutes, Koponen’s first failed throw was finally seen, with a ninth three-point attempt.
In the end, in less than 24 minutes of play, Koponen immersed nine three-point throws from his 11 attempts, and did not attempt a single second or free throw.
In addition to Koponen, a remarkable series of statistics was compiled by Captain Seagulls Tuukka Kotti. The experienced center only scored one point, but he accumulated 14 rebounds and eight assists to the basket. The home’s plus-minus balance was almost a staggering 45 points on the plus side.
Profit was now the fourth in a row for Seagulls, who lost their season opener in Kouvola. In the league table, the people of Helsinki rose to eight points alongside Kauhajoki, although they played one match more.
On Friday, Seagulls will return to Töölö Race Hall. The opponent in that match is Korihait, a series jumper who has lost all four of his games so far.
