Unanimous applause and euphoria. Much euphoria on the Barcelona dock for the third consecutive victory of Emirates New Zealand. The New Zealand team won the Hundred Guineas Jug this Saturday at the Race Village in Barcelona’s Moll de la Fusta, with a 7-2 victory against INEOS Britannia.
After climbing to the podium for the third consecutive time – and the fifth for the team – in the 37th America’s Cup in Barcelona, the New Zealanders celebrated their victory yesterday, accompanied by family, friends and followers, with indescribable feelings. This was explained by Peter Burling, main helmsman of the ‘Kiwis’.
With a sports record that speaks for itself – three Olympic medals with gold in Rio 16′, two silvers in London 12′ and Tokyo 20′, in addition to being a six-time world champion -, Burling explained that; “We have been lucky to make good starts with a Taihoro that is very fast in acceleration.” And he added that; “INEOS has been a very powerful opponent, winning the ‘Round Robin’ and the Challengers Tournament.”
“Applause for Emirates, having won the America’s Cup three consecutive times is something incredible”
Praise also came from the general director of America’s Cup Events BCN, Gran Dalton. The Emirates director was more than proud of the work the team has done. Praise that was also extended to the Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish Government. Not in vain, Dalton thanked all the institutions for the enormous effort made over so many months.
The 67-year-old general director of America’s Cup Events BCN does not rest and is already focused on the 38th America’s Cup. He assures that work cannot wait. And when asked about the next first challenger – a place occupied by INEOS in the Barcelona edition -, he responded that; “It is not yet known, but it will be announced shortly.”
Barcelona closes a great 37th America’s Cup
The final ceremony, with the presence of the mayor of Barcelona Jaume Collboni, closed yesterday Saturday the 37th America’s Cup after two months of intense competition with the participation of the teams as well; the French Orient Express, the Swiss Alinghi Red Bull, the American NYYC American Magic and the Italian Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.
And while Emirates Team New Zealand marked a milestone in the history of the America’s Cup, Sir Ben Ainslie – INEOS Britain’s main helmsman and four-time Olympic champion – praised his rival with great sportsmanship. “Winning the America’s Cup three consecutive times is something incredible, so from here we congratulate Emirates Team New Zealand.”
The competition has also highlighted the role of women, with the Puig Women’s Copa del América being held for the first time after 173 years of competition history. A competition that was won by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team, after beating Athena Pathway, followed by the Spanish team Sail Team BCN, with a creditable third place. Likewise, the youth cup, the UniCredit YouthCopa América, was held again, also led by the Italian team Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli.
