The investigation into the fatal shot by American actor Alec Baldwin on the set of the film Rust focuses mainly on two employees: the film gunsmith and the film’s assistant director. They were the last to have had the weapon with which the shot was fired, according to a police report that American media obtained.
It involves Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who had prepared the weapon, and assistant Dave Halls, who is known as a seasoned professional. He handed the gun—one of three Gutierrez had set up on a cart—and yelled “cold gun,” meaning no bullets in it.
However, the weapon did contain a bullet. When Baldwin fired the gun, he shot and killed 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins. The film gunsmith is said to have first removed the empty shell from the weapon after the relevant shot, before handing over the gun to the police.
‘Devastated by the loss’
The rifle served as a prop, and contained one real bullet and some blanks. Hutchins died almost immediately after the shot, and director Joel Souza was also injured. After a short hospital stay, he was allowed to continue to recover at home.
Souza says he is “devastated” by the loss of his colleague Hutchins. “She was kind, lively, incredibly talented, fought every inch and always pushed me to get better,” Souza told Deadline’s website. Baldwin had previously reported on Twitter that he is “in shock” and “sad” by the event.
No charges have been filed against Baldwin. He stated that he did not know that the weapon contained a real bullet.
