Tesla will call for almost all cybertrucks that has produced to repair a stainless steel aesthetic panel that, according to the manufacturer, could be detached from the vehicle during driving. This is the eighth call to the badge of the badge Pick-up Fully electric that reached US roads just over two years ago.
However, unlike many other call calls related to Tesla, it cannot be solved with an update of software by air, but must be taken to a service center for repair. The revision call affects more than 46,000 cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and the end of February 2025.
The revision call is related to an aesthetic element outside the vehicle that is attached to the rest of the body through a kind of glue, according to a file published by the National Road Traffic Safety Administration, the US Road Safety Regulator. In the affected cybertrucks, the adhesive can be separated, creating a possible “road danger” for others and increasing the risk of accident.
Complaints about the embellishing appeared for the first time on social networks and Tesla suspended Cybertruck production last week. Tesla states in the report that the problem began to investigate in early January. Tesla will repair the problem with another type of adhesive “not prone to become fragile for environmental reasons.”
Dale Harrow, president and director of the Smart Mobility Design Center of the Royal College of Art in London, qualifies as “surprising” this last call to workshop for the Cybertrucks.
“Today, glue is used much more than people believe in body construction,” he says. “Instead of having a mechanical fixation, a welding or a screw or a bolt, it is very effective [de problemas] anywhere else. “
According to Harrow, the car industry uses numerous glue to join panels and pieces, and adds that different adhesives are used based on the necessary union force, the particular circumstances and the materials in question. However, what differentiates the cyber from other vehicles is the unconventional use of stainless steel for its panels.
“Stainless steel is the big difference,” says Harrow, “so maybe there has been some problem related to that.” Harrow points out that this failure seems to occur in cold climates, and that it could be that stainless steel better drove the cold, possibly enough to make a difference in the curing process.
“It could assume that something in the production chain is not adhering at the right temperature or is not obtaining correct UV coverage. And that could be due to the fact that stainless steel has a different density of standard steel. It is not a small company, and does not do things at low price. I would be very surprised that the company did not have the necessary knowledge to solve it. But I think it would have to investigate enough to find out the real cause.”
Calls to review vehicles are increasingly frequent because cars are increasingly sophisticated and depend on electronic components that can adjust – but also work bad software. According to NHTSSA, annual revision calls in the US increased almost 70% between 2003 and 2023, affecting 83% more vehicles. The number of vehicle repairs related to revision calls made by air updates was multiplied by ten between 2019 and 2023.
But five of the cybertruck retreats have required Tesla drivers to take their vehicles to the workshop. The most overwhelming have included withdrawals related to failures in the driver of the front windshield windshield and the malfunction of the pedal pads, which Tesla said they were treated with a soap not approved during the assembly that caused them to be trapped, which caused an “involuntary acceleration.”
Even before the Cybertruck began shooting outside the production lines, the truck was subject to delays. Its dazzling presentation event in 2019 can be more memorable by an incident in which the supposedly unbreakable glass of a prototype did not resist a metal ball thrown against the driver’s window. In the middle of the pandemic, Tesla delayed the production of Cybertruck from 2021 to the late 2022 and, finally, at the end of 2023. Meanwhile, its base price jumped from 40,000 to 61,000 dollars.
Filtered internal documents obtained by the German newspaper Handelsblatt And Wired showed that, in January 2022, Tesla continued to fight internally with an “alpha” version of preproduction of the vehicle that had basic problems with the suspension, the sealing of the body, the noise levels, the handling and the braking.
The rugged beginning of the cybertruck does not seem to have bothered the White House. Last week, the electric truck was among other Tesla models parked at the presidential entrance while Donald Trump promoted the car manufacturer of the advisor and head of Doge Elon Musk.
