Swimming is one of the best ways for children to become familiar with the aquatic environment, as well as providing great peace of mind for parents
With the arrival of summer, there are many families who go with their children to beaches, swimming pools and other aquatic areas to combat the suffocating temperatures of the summer season. However, every year there are reports of children who have drowned in this type of recreational area. Therefore, in addition to parents not losing sight of them at any time, it is important that children know how to swim and know the environment.
Irene Palazón, sports director of the Verdolay Center in Murcia, explains that “swimming is one of the most effective ways for children to familiarize themselves with and lose their fear of water, as well as providing great peace of mind for parents.”
The adaptation to the aquatic environment classes can be taken from six months and these are courses for babies up to 12 months in which they are accompanied by their parents, where work is done to familiarize them with the environment. From the age of 12 months, and until they are just 3 years old, they begin to carry out exercises to move with auxiliary material and even make small distances to the curb inside the pool.
The swimming courses themselves begin at the age of 3, where children are no longer accompanied by their parents, and begin to use more resources and learn different styles such as front crawl or backstroke.
As for the materials that are usually used, Palazón recommends ‘churros’, sleeves or boards; tools “that help little ones stay afloat but are less risky” than others, such as mats or floats.
