Awards The Finnish Cultural Foundation awarded grand prizes of 35,000 euros to the author and two professors

Professor Heikki Hiilamo, Professor Jaakko Kaprio and author Sirpa Kähkönen were awarded for researching the welfare state, twins and humanity.

Professor Heikki Hiilamo is awarded for researching nausea and defending well-being.

Hiilamo (b. 1964), Doctor of Social Policy and Public Health, works as a professor of social policy at the University of Helsinki and a research professor at THL. He has also been Kela’s research professor and director of diaconia at the Church Board.

Hiilamo has extensively studied the Nordic welfare state: poverty, indebtedness, family policy, church diaconal work, health care systems and substance abuse policy.

He has written more than 20 non-fiction books on the topics and published more than 100 scientific articles. Hiilamo has worked as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, and as a visiting professor in Oslo.

“Very active participation in the social debate as a columnist, non-fiction writer and expert is an essential part of Heikki Hiilamo’s research profile,” the press release says.

Professor Jaakko Kaprio was awarded for genetic research.

Kaprio (b. 1952) is a research professor at the Finnish Institute of Molecular Medicine. He previously worked as a professor at the universities of Oulu and Helsinki.

Kaprio’s field of research is genetic epidemiology. He started researching Finnish twins as early as his dissertation in 1984. Kaprio was responsible for the design and implementation of extensive twin follow-up research at the University of Helsinki.

Kaprio’s research team has been able to determine the role of environmental factors and genetic predisposition in the development of addictions. For example, they have identified several smoking-related genes.

“Caprio was already doing international research at a time when it wasn’t as common as it is now. He is one of the most cited Finnish scientists, and his list of publications includes more than 1,300 titles, ”the press release explains.

Author Sirpa Kähkönen is known for his historical novels.

Kähkönen (b.1964) studied literary studies and history and worked as a publisher before pursuing a full-time career as a writer.
