With the theatrical release of Deadpool & Wolverine and the recent announcement of the return of Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role, this time, of the Doctor Doomthe Multiverse Saga has come to life. The MCU Multiverse, up to now, has been the scene of several returns of characters who appeared in feature films not produced by Marvel Studios, just think of Tobey Maguire And Andrew Garfield in the role of Peter Parker in No Way HomeAnd Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine in the aforementioned film starring the chatty mercenary.
Avengers: Secret Wars will arrive at May 2027so there are just under three years left before we can witness the end of the Multiverse Saga. Despite the long wait, speculation has already begun regarding the possible returns and cameos that we could see in the sixth film starring the Avengers. In this sense, let’s see together which actors (and their respective characters) could make their appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars.
What are the Secret Wars?
Marvel comic book history has had two Secret Wars. In the original Secret Wars of the 1984series curated by Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck and Bob Layton, many of the Marvel Universe’s most important heroes suddenly found themselves reunited by the entity Beyonderwho had also called upon great villains such as Galactus, Ultron and Doctor Doom. The entity sent superheroes and supervillains into the Battleworda place that served as a theater of war between the two groups. The series also had a direct sequel, Secret Wars II. However, the sixth film starring the Avengers It won’t be inspired by any two crossoversbut at Secret Wars, comic series of 2015 curated by Jonathan Hickman with drawings by Esad Ribić.
This one told a story similar in some ways to its 1984 predecessor, but its main theme was not the clash between good and evil but rather between parallel universesThe main Marvel Universe was on a collision course with other Earths in the Multiverse, and in this scenario, when two parallel dimensions breach their boundaries by coming into contact with each other, both are destroyed. A concept, that of “incursions”, which was also introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and which will probably be a key piece in Avengers: Secret Wars as well.
WARNING: There may be possible SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine from here on out.
Magneto (Ian McKellen)
We have already seen the appearance of Patrick Stewart (in the role of Charles Xavier/Professor X) in the above mentioned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhile we still haven’t had any cameos from the Magneto Of Ian McKellen. His is without a doubt one of the most popular and iconic characters in the X-Men films and, up to now, he has been the great absentee among the “nostalgic cameos” of recent products by the Marvel Studios. His absence was mentioned, through a funny sketch, in Deadpool & Wolverine, but nothing prevents us from thinking that the actor and consequently Magneto could appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. For a prominent character like this, the film in question could be the perfect setting for his appearance. It cannot be excluded, however, that the character may also appear with the face of Michael Fassbender.
Superior Iron Man (Tom Cruise)
Iron Man is the character that represents the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that this cinematic universe was born in 2008 with the film Iron Man. The character died in Avengers: Endgame and for ten years was played by Robert Downey Jr.which however in the original plans he wasn’t the first choice for the role. Originally the actor chosen to play this character was Tom Cruise and, precisely for this reason, it was thought that the actor would appear in the role of Superior Iron Man (a megalomaniac version of Tony Stark) in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which however did not happen. The Marvel Cinematic Multiverse, however, is still far from its conclusion, and until then, we can fantasize about an appearance of Cruise in Avengers: Secret Wars. After all, we had Channing Tatum as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ghost Rider (Nicolas Cage)
Director’s grandson Francis Ford Coppola, Nicholas Cage he has repeatedly professed himself to be a great comic book fan. In fact, the actor, in order to avoid suspicions of possible favoritism as Coppola’s nephew, at the beginning of his career changed his surname to Cage as a tribute to the Marvel superhero Luke Cage. Over the years he has participated in several film projects inspired by the world of comics, from Superman Lives Of Tim Burton (a film that was cancelled before filming began) to the most recent Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Between the two projects, Cage starred in Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider and in its sequel Spirit of Vengeance. Given his recent cameo in The Flash in the role of Superman just to pay homage to that Superman Lives that never saw the light, his appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars as Ghost Rider could be more than just a suggestion.
Chris Evans (Captain America/Agent of Hydra)
Over the years we have come to know and love Chris Evans in the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role he said goodbye to after Avengers: Endgame. The actor also played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in films starring the Fantastic Four directed by Tim Storyand the character in question appeared as a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. Since the character has undergone a macabre death in the aforementioned film, we are unlikely to see Evans’ Johnny Storm in Avengers: Secret Wars. It would be interesting to see him play Captain America again, but to mix things up, it would be even more intriguing see him play the role of Hydra agent Steve Rogersas a reference to the controversial comic series Secret Empire.
Hulk (Eric Bana and/or Edward Norton)
Before having the face of Mark RuffaloBruce Banner has had several interpreters, In 2003 he was played by Eric Ban in the underrated Hulk directed by Ang Leewhile in 2008 the role was covered by Edward Norton in the movie The Incredible Hulk Of Louis Leterrier. Norton was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo himself due to some creative differences with Marvel Studios. The careers of both actors have taken paths far removed from entertainment cinema, but this does not exclude that one of the two could return for a brief cameo in Avengers: Secret Wars. Norton’s appearance, specifically, could retroactively make an actor who gave up the role a “variant,” which would make the film The Incredible Hulk a story from an alternate universe to the MCU.
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)
It’s true, it has been made official that Robert Downey Jr. will officially return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Doctor Doom and not in Tony Stark’s. The character will be the main villain in Avengers: Doomsday and in Avengers: Secret Wars and, as far as we know, only the second will have the Multiverse as a key element of the narrative. In this sense, it cannot be excluded that it will make its appearance in Secret Wars a variant of Tony Stark coming from a universe where he didn’t sacrifice himself like at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The idea of seeing Iron Man and Doctor Doom clash, both played by Robert Downey Jr.is definitely intriguing, and, all things considered, not at all unlikely.
