Mayor Serrano and President López Miras, at their first meeting, agree to create a monitoring commission on common issues
The president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, held the first institutional meeting with the socialist mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, at noon this Monday, during which the Murcian councilor demanded the local financing law that ends the deficit of a little more than 40 million euros in inappropriate competitions that the City Council assumes every year. On the part of the Community, the counselor of the presidency, Marcos Ortuño, replied that before that the Spanish Government must change the autonomous financing model, which “penalizes” Murcian with 2 million euros less every day.
“The reality is that we are the only Spanish Community that lacks this local financing plan, which is even in regions that are also under-financed, such as Valencia,” insisted the Murcian mayor. However, sources from the Autonomous Community recalled that neither Castilla-La Mancha, Valencian Community nor Asturias have it.
The San Esteban Palace was the venue for the “fruitful and fluid” meeting, in which they planned the concern of both for the situation of the pandemic and its effects on families and the economy of economic sectors. Serrano also put on the table the need for better coordination of metropolitan transport (whose collaboration agreement is already underway to avoid duplication in the service); the construction of the coastal highways of the municipality, increase the contribution of the Community in the improvement of the educational centers, the contribution of 30% of the pending financing of the Community to continue with the San Esteban project (new garden and restart excavations) and support for the declaration of a Special Flood Zone for the municipality of Murcia, which allows unlocking urban developments, among others.
“The president has also been receptive to the economic participation of the Community in the construction of the Sports City, because it is a project of the Region and not only of Murcia,” said Serrano, who noted that the president had been “very receptive” to requests. After the meeting, both administrations agreed to create a technical committee to monitor the issues discussed, which will meet every three months.
The Minister of the Presidency, for his part, stressed that López Miras had made the entire regional administration available to the City Council for improvements for the residents of Murcia and districts, and recalled that the municipality received one million euros in works in neighborhoods and districts .
He indicated that the Community “will study” its economic participation in the construction of the Sports City. Regarding financing, he insisted that “first the Community problem must be solved” and demanded that the central government release the Covid funds that it has been sending to the autonomous communities in 2020 and 2021, and that for now it has not planned for 2022 Regarding the rest of the issues addressed, “we will address them as quickly as possible,” he concluded.
