Barcelona said Aubameyang would sign a contract until June 2025 with a clause allowing his departure on June 30, 2023.
And the Catalan team set a penalty clause for his departure worth 100 million euros ($113.08 million).
Aubameyang joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund 4 years ago and was the last player to be joined by former coach Arsene Wenger.
The Gabonese striker quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 92 goals in 163 appearances for the club, and the 32-year-old left the English club by mutual consent on Tuesday.
He has not played for the north London club since December after coach Mikel Arteta stripped him of the captaincy for a disciplinary offense.
Aubameyang left the Gabonese team early in the African Nations Cup after the Gabonese Football Association said that the striker would return to his club, Arsenal, to undergo medical tests, after discovering heart problems during the tests he underwent in Cameroon after contracting Covid-19.
One of Aubameyang’s most prominent achievements with Arsenal was his leadership of the London club to its 14th FA Cup title in 2020, where he scored his team’s two goals in a 2-1 victory over Chelsea, after also scoring twice against Manchester City in the semi-finals.
Aubameyang scored 22 goals in both the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons, but only scored 10 goals in the league the following season, in which Arsenal finished eighth.
After long negotiations over his contract, Aubameyang signed a new three-year contract with Arsenal in 2020, much to the delight of the London club’s fans, who were eager for the Gabonese striker to stay.
But things went wrong with Aubameyang this season, and the club was so eager to get rid of one of its most prominent players that they let him leave for free 18 months before the end of his contract.
Barcelona is looking to rebuild its squad after the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain.
Leaving Arsenal
On his departure from the London club, Aubameyang wrote on Instagram: “My focus has always been 100 percent to do everything I can for the club, and that’s why it hurts to leave without a good farewell, but that’s how football is.”
“I am sad that I did not get a chance to help my teammates in the past few weeks, but I have nothing but the utmost respect for the club and I really wish all my teammates and fans the best of luck and many successful years in the future.”
